One of Germany's most important—and controversial—artists, Murkus Lüpertz (born 1941) has thrived by challenging convention and confounding expectations. Responding to postwar abstract art, he created large-scale gestural reworkings of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Other works range from geometric abstraction to paraphrastic commentary on Michelangelo, Picasso, and Matisse. Extremely prolific, he creates hundreds of works—paintings, sculptures, poems—a year. He also finds the time to box and play piano.
