This phrase book has been specially designed to meet the needs of travellers to Turkey and may possibly be of help to Turkish travellers abroad, too. The Turkish language at first falls strangely upon English ears, being one of the Ural - Altaic group of languages, and in the beginning the thought of making oneself understood may be prohibitive. This however need not be so, for pronuncuiation is not so diificult. We do not think that is absolutely necessary to use some special symbols to show pronunciation except only a few. This is because the Turkish orthography (spelling). Broadly speaking, is almost entirely based on its morpho-phonemic spelling system, in other words, its letters, with very few exceptions, represent its phonemic sounds. After all, Turkish, unlike English, has one of the most satisfactory phonetic alphabets in the world.
